May 18th Young Eagles rally is cancelled due to weather.

Next meeting is on Tuesday June 4th at 1900

Friends and Members of Chapter 1099,

I wish to give a hearty THANK YOU to all the volunteers who came out to help us on Saturday for our first Young Eagle Rally of 2013!  The weather was spectacular and the event was a big success.  We flew 44 Young Eagles and six Eagles (adults).

I want to especially recognize the folks who came out to help for the first time:  Jim Hanson, Rob and Amy Krieg, Maryanne Buckley, Gordon Alling, and Michael Hale.

Our returning stalwart veterans who also helped run our ramp operations and registration were:  Scott Huff, Edie Jones, Gail Merrill, and myself.

 Our pilots/flights were:

With so much lift and enough ramp hands to support our aircraft, we rarely broke a sweat.  This enabled us to complete our Young Eagle flights an hour earlier than anticipated.  Eagle flights had been requested in advance by adults in this group and we consulted with the pilots, who were first to complete our YE group, to see if they would give Eagle flights.  Happily we were able to give six Eagle flights to finish the day.  It has been our experience that these adults go on to promote our program to other youth and thus expand our base of Young Eagles.

Our lunch seemed well received.  I wish to give a BIG THANKS to Mike at Family Pizzeria, 1924 Jefferson Davis Highway, Stafford VA, 540-288-3277, for DONATING FIVE LARGE ASSORTED PIZZAS for our volunteers at the rally!  His restaurant is just south of the Stafford hospital on the east side of route one.    I hope all Chapter members will visit his restaurant to try a pizza and tell Mike you really appreciate him helping our chapter!

We started the rally off with two dozen assorted doughnuts and (from Stafford Airport) coffee.   At lunch we did have a veggie plate, two bananas, diet sodas, and bottled water available.  Of course, we also had bags of assorted chips, five pizzas, and Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, and two varieties of large cookies.  To the casual observer, this may appear like we’re serving rampant carbohydrates.  However, rest assured our menus are coordinated through our Chapter’s Dietary Control Officer, Max Gross.

On the Mountain Dew, we only had two bottles (ordered by a pilot).  Unfortunately, there was more demand for those two bottles than expected . . .  If you plan to attend a rally, just drop Dick Merrill an e-mail with your preferred drink and I’ll try to have it on hand.  For pilots, had it been a warmer day, I would have asked the ramp crew to provide you a bottled water or other resealable drink upon your third flight.  So, let me know if you have a preference . . .

I can e-mail pilots with the names and addresses of the Young Eagles they flew for tax deduction purposes.  I do not have a tax deduction policy for Eagles to offer you yet and this is something we’ll look into . . .  Nonetheless, I can provide you their names as well.  For pilots not already receiving this information from me, please let me know soonest if you would like this information as I must soon send in the registration forms to EAA HQ.

Our next rally is Saturday, 18 May, at Stafford Airport using the same format as last Saturday. We will be flying a large group of Young Marines and a smaller group.  But, looking farther ahead, please mark your calendar for 19 October at Stafford Airport for Wings and Wheels Festival.  We have a large rally at that event (and a Chapter pancake breakfast to also host in the early morning).  This is by far our biggest local community (and charity) event.   Last year we registered 98 Young Eagles and only three of our pilots/aircraft heroically attempted to fly them.  Hopefully, we will have enough lift this year.
